A Day Across Bali’s Water Temples, Rice Terraces and Ocean Horizon

This ten-hour private route follows the cultural relationship between water, agriculture, royal history and the sea. The day begins in Bedugul at Ulun Danu Beratan, where lake, mountain and temple architecture meet in the cool highlands. It then descends toward Jatiluwih, a vast rice-terrace landscape shaped by the traditional subak irrigation system.

The journey continues through Sangeh’s forest sanctuary and the royal water-temple architecture of Taman Ayun in Mengwi. Tanah Lot becomes the final destination, where a sixteenth-century sea temple stands on a rocky offshore setting and the late-afternoon light creates one of Bali’s most recognizable coastal scenes.

Rather than presenting these places as isolated attractions, the route tells a connected story about how Balinese communities organize sacred space, water, farming and landscape.

Ulun Danu Beratan

Ulun Danu Beratan sits beside Lake Beratan in the Bedugul highlands. Rebuilt in 1633, the complex is known for multi-tiered shrines, cool mountain weather and a visual relationship with the lake that changes as the water level rises and falls.

The temple is an active sacred place, so the visit is planned with respect for ceremonies, worshippers and local dress requirements.

Jatiluwih Rice Terrace

Jatiluwih spreads across the slopes below Mount Batukaru in Tabanan. Its terraces are part of Bali’s UNESCO-recognized cultural landscape and express the subak system, a community-based approach to irrigation linked with temples, cooperation and the Tri Hita Karana philosophy.

The view changes with the planting cycle, but the scale of the landscape and the relationship between fields, villages and water channels remain the central experience.

Taman Ayun Temple

Taman Ayun is the royal water temple of Mengwi and forms part of the UNESCO Cultural Landscape of Bali Province. Its moat, gardens and rows of multi-tiered meru towers create an ordered architectural composition connected with the historic subak network.

The outer paths allow visitors to appreciate the temple’s scale and symmetry while respecting the sacred inner courtyards.

Ocean Temple

Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s best-known coastal temples. Indonesia’s official tourism information associates the sanctuary with the sixteenth-century priest Dang Hyang Nirartha, and the main temple stands on a rocky offshore formation shaped by waves and tides.

Access and views change with the tide. The stop is timed toward the later part of the day, although sunset conditions cannot be guaranteed.
